MECA students can start taking college classes as early as the summer after freshman year. They can earn up to 40 college credits while at MECA and stay for two more years to earn a FREE Associate's Degree from BMCC. Through the CUNY Early College Initiative (ECI) and our BMCC Partnership, MECA prepares students for college and helps them get a head start by earning credits. Starting in 10th Grade, MECA students engage in college-level courses taught by BMCC faculty. By 11th Grade, students begin taking college classes at the BMCC campus, and in 12th Grade, students split their time between BMCC and MECA, taking mostly college courses along with a few high school classes. Our school is proud to have the best Guidance Counselors team dedicated to providing academic and emotional support to students in need. Our team works closely with students to identify and address any barriers that may be interfering with their learning. We believe that by providing students with a strong support system, we can enable them to become successful, resilient individuals who are better prepared to take on any challenge that comes their way. Re-Imaging Special Education for New York City Students What is IEP The Individualized Education program is a plan imposed by the DOE to provide students with Free and Appropriate Education in their Least Restrictive Environment. Student Handbook Graduation Requirements Helpful Resources At our high school, we provide enriching education. We offer various diploma options: Regents Diploma, Advanced Regents Diploma, and CTE Endorsed Diploma as well as the option of earning an Associates Degree. We believe every student should have the chance to challenge themselves and to achieve their full potential, and we are dedicated to providing the tools and resources to help them succeed. Graduation Requirements Highschool Diplomas (9-12th) CTE Endorsed Diploma (9-12th) Associates Degree - BMCC (12-14th) Advanced Regents Diploma Exam Requirements Students must score 65 or higher on the following nine exams to earn an advanced Regents diploma. Students complete the final 30 credits to earn their Associate’s Degree. Students learn side-by-side with industry professionals in 2-year paid internships. Internships placements are determined based on students’ area of interest. Students take a bi-weekly work-based learning course that includes special seminars and workshops. Students are paired with a recent college graduate working in the industry who becomes their mentor. Students participate in a monthly lunch series with Senior Executives from select Advertising and Media agencies. Login Afterschool/Tutoring Sessions Obtaining Working Papers and Completing I-9 Forms I-9 Forms Using the current version of Form I-9 (as of November 1, 2023, the 08/01/23 edition), the steps include: Completing Section 1 before or on first day of work, providing personal information and work authorization status. Within 3 business days, employer reviews employee's identity and work authorization documents (either one from List A, or one each from List B and C). Employer examines documents for authenticity and relevance to the employee. Employer completes Section 2, recording document information. Employer signs and dates the form, attesting to document examination. Complete any necessary supplements (e.g., Preparer/Translator Certification). Retain I-9 form for required period (3 years after hire or 1 year after employment ends, whichever is later). Store forms securely; make available for official inspection if requested. Industry Scholars Program Learn More The Industry Scholars Program (ISP) offers paid six-week internships for NYC high school students aged 16-18 in various industries, providing real-world work experience in Career and Technical Education (CTE) fields. CTE-ISP supports students in CTE programs with sector-specific work-based learning, training, and internships. Workplace Challenge Learn More A Workplace Challenge is a Career Preparation activity where small groups of 4-6 students work together to solve a real-world problem or challenge presented by an employer. Showcasing Our Success Paid Internships Adverting Competition Certifications + Skills Career Discovery BrandMECAnics Internships High-school students can participate in paid internships, earning professional experience worth over $8,000 and 600+ hours. Launch Your Creative Career with Paid Internships! Get hands-on experience creating characters for cartoons, games, or movies through a paid Character Design internship. Gain valuable experience in the tech industry with a paid WorkED or Cyber Tech internship. Discover your passions through a paid SYEP (Summer Youth Employment Program) internship in a variety of fields. ReACT Advertising Competition The ReACT competition is a program designed for high school students to develop their advertising skills. Students compete by creating a comprehensive 360° marketing /advertising campaign, which they then present to industry professionals from the 4A's Foundation. This advertising competition was created when the school first opened to add real life workplace challenges into the curriculum. This program provides a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience and receive feedback from leading advertising experts. As part of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) for older youth (ages 16 and up), students have the option to participate in MECA's BrandMECAnics agency as a paid summer job. Through this agency, older youth participants help create and maintain the project "Rebranding MECA" at Havas Media. BrandMECAnics The Brandmecanics program for younger youth (13-15 ) is held at BMCC and coordinated by a designated facilitator. Students are divided into groups and tasked with creating campaigns on various topics. These campaigns are then evaluated by professionals at the end of six weeks, with prizes awarded for first, second, and third place. MECA Rebranding Casestudy Professional Skills (Top 10 Employability skills) Technical Skills & Certification At MECA, students learn to effectively use essential applications like Adobe, Google Workspace, Wix, LinkedIn, and Canva, ect, to enhance their work, designs, and facilitate your career growth. Our Story MECA is a 9-14 NYC P-TECH New York City’s Grades 9-14 Early College and Career Schools (also known as P-TECH Schools) are public schools under the NYC Department of Education that offer an innovative six-year high school program to prepare students for college and careers competitive in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) industries. Each one of the Grades 9-14 schools is affiliated with a CUNY community college and offers students the opportunity to take courses toward an Associate degree, at no cost to the student. The Manhattan Early College School for Advertising (MECA) is a six-year Career and Technical Education High School that not only gives students access to explore careers in Advertising, Media and Creative Technology, but also offers students a free Associates Degree upon completion of the program. In addition to building advertising knowledge, the curriculum includes soft skills such as presenting and storytelling.
